Root Canal Therapy refers to the process by which the inner aspects of a tooth the pulp tissue i.e. nerve are removed from the canal of the tooth.
What is the function of a tooth’s nerve tissue?
When healthy, every nerve contains a nerve tissue. The nerve tissue plays an important role in the formation and development of the tooth. The nerve tissues main role is to keep the organic components of the tooth mineralized (i.e. enamel and dentin) and supplied with nutrients and moisture. The nerve tissue also has a sensory function. Under normal circumstances the nerve remains quiet but when activated by extreme pressure, temperature or severe insult (meaning cracked of advanced decay) the nerve will respond with a painful sensation.
Calcium Hydroxide:
Our root canal appointments are preformed in two appointments. This helps let the tooth settle down once the nerve is removed and a medication is inserted into the canals to help restore the pH balance and neutralize the tooth. We use calcium hydroxide inside the canals once opened. It is a white powder which is activated by mixing it with ozone water. This material is biocompatible and has an alkaline pH that is similar to the surrounding tissues.
